FORT COLLINS, CO (May 10, 2000) - Advanced Energy Industries, Inc. (NASDAQ: AEIS) today announced that it has appointed industry veteran Shunsuke Sugao to serve as President of Advanced Energy Japan. Mr. Sugao will be responsible for the oversight of all operations for the company's Japanese subsidiary. He will replace Jim Gordley, Corporate Vice President of Sales who has served as interim President over the past year.

Opened in 1987, Advanced Energy Japan provides sales, service and applications engineering in Japan. In recent years, the Japanese subsidiary has achieved double-digit revenue growth.

"His extensive background in operations, marketing and sales will be invaluable as we move forward with our planned expansion of product offerings for Japan, particularly in the radio frequency (RF) power supply area," he added.

Mr. Sugao has over 15 years experience in the industry. He joins Advanced Energy from Varian where most recently he served as Director of Sales for Japan for the Vacumn Products Division. During his tenure with Varian, Mr. Sugao also served as Area Manager of the Far East and South Asia, during which time he established a network of dealers and distributors in South Asia and Japan. Mr. Sugao earned his bachelor's degree in economics from Kanagawa University in Japan.
