FORT COLLINS, COLORADO -- October 9, 1998 Advanced Energy Industries, Inc. (Nasdaq:AEIS) announces the appointment of Arthur Zafiropoulo and Gerald M. Starek to the Board of Directors. Messrs. Zafiropoulo and Starek join the Advanced Energy board as part of the completed acquisition of RF Power Products, Inc., announced yesterday.

Mr. Zafiropoulo, 58, has been the President of Ultratech Stepper, a manufacturer of lithographic equipment for the semiconductor industry, since October 1990. From February 1989 until he joined Ultratech, he was President of General Signal Semiconductor Equipment Group’s International Operations. Mr. Zafiropoulo was President of Drytek, a manufacturer of plasma etching equipment from July 1980 until February 1989. In addition, he was President of Kayex, a unit of General Signal, from July 1988 to June 1989. Mr. Zafiropoulo has served on the Board of Directors for RF Power Products since July 1992. He also is a director of Ultratech Stepper.

Mr. Starek, 55, a private investor, founded Silicon Valley Group, Inc. From September 1991 to April 1993, he served as Silicon Valley Group’s Vice Chairman and from September 1984 to September 1991, served as Silicon Valley Group’s Chairman. Mr. Starek has served on the Board of Director for RF Power Products since February 1994.

With the additions of Messrs. Zafiropoulo and Starek, Advanced Energy’s board increases to eight directors, four of whom are outside directors.
